Family told to remove railings round grave

A grieving family has received notice from Highland Council to remove pebbles and a small fence they have placed around a grave. Lillian Matheson received the letter about her late husband’s grave with instructions that she must remove the things that she has put around it at Petty-Tornagrain.

“When my mum and brother died the council told us what we could put on the grave apart from the headstone. They told me I could plant snowdrops and crocus but not daffodils as they would start mowing the grass before daffodils come out. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the council to ask the family to remove the railings as they are not allowed.” - Frances Macrae

“Shocking to hear this, the way they cut the grass and chip the gravestones with no care and attention no wonder people put these railings up.” - Donna Macleod Fisher

Highland Council news

“Absolutely agree Donna, the state they leave some graves in is disgusting and they take no responsibility for it is. I've lost count of the decor I've had to replace because I've gone along to find they've mowed right up to the headstone or when there is no headstone they go right over the decor without a care They're a joke.” - Amy Grassick

“While the railings are rather attractive I think they should be removed. Until the terms and conditions for using any of the council's facilities are changed, they should at least be be respected. If you choose to ignore the terms and conditions deliberately, or even if you or someone working for you breaks them in error, it is your responsibility to make things right.” - Gerry Reynolds

“Rules and regulations are great if the people making them adhere to those set out for themselves. As said in previous posts, Tomnahurich Cemetery is a disgrace. We have to cut the grass there ourselves and tidy it up because HC seem incapable of doing the basics. Let this lady visit her husbands grave and tend to it as it obviously gives her great comfort and she is quite clearly making a better job of it than the council.” - Susan McCreadie
