A man was annoyed when he was denied permission to sit beside another man on a public bench a court has heard.

Daniel Donahue (31) of Muirfield Lane, Inverness, began shouting and swearing at his companion before punching him in the face.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told both men were resident in the Birchwood House rehabilitation centre and had left the building on February 21 this year.

Donahue admitted a charge of assault and sentence had been deferred for a background report.

Defence solicitor advocate Shahid Latif said: "He accepts it was unacceptable behaviour."

Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald told Donahue: "You can't punch someone on the head just because you disagree with them. But you have spent six weeks in custody (in connection with this case) and because of this I will admonish you."
