A former tanker driver with almost 50 years of conviction-free driving earned his first endorsement on his licence following a road rage type incident.

George MacLennan, aged 66, of West Balcroy, Cawdor, was heading into Inverness on December 31, 2020 and had just passed the Dalcross Airport roundabout at Tornagrain.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that MacLennan passed a vehicle which was travelling well below the 60mph speed limit, defence solicitor Neil Wilson said.

He explained that the other motorist made a gesture as his client passed and MacLennan then braked sharply as he pulled in front.

However, the court heard that the other driver did not have time to brake and ran into the back of MacLennan's car. Minor damage was caused, fiscal depute Robyn MacLeod told Sheriff Lindsay Foulis.

MacLennan admitted driving carelessly and braking sharply without reasonable cause.

Mr Wilson added: "When he got to Inverness, he immediately reported the incident to police. The other driver took hours before reporting it.

"No matter what gesture the driver made to him when he overtook, he should not have braked sharply but should have driven on." Mr Wilson said.

MacLennan, who is now retired, was fined £520 and had his licence endorsed with eight penalty points.
