An Inverness councillor has welcomed the resumption of work on a new pedestrian crossing in Glenurquhart Road.

Installation of a pedestrian-controlled crossing by Bear Scotland was brought to a halt in March by the coronavirus lockdown.

Work resumed this week and is expected to finish in about four weeks.

Inverness West councillor Alex Graham said: "With local residents and council colleagues, Cllr Bill Boyd and Cllr Graham Ross, I took part in a lengthy campaign for safer road crossing in the Ballifeary and Dalneigh areas.

"A crossing in this area was always top of the list for local people, and they were delighted when Transport Scotland approved it.

"Once installed it will be a major boost to road safety on the west side of Inverness.

"Hopefully the new crossing will be ready when schools reopen in mid-August – Central Primary, St Joseph's Primary and Inverness High School are all close at hand.

"A second pedestrian crossing will be installed soon just a few hundred yards away close to the Montague Row junction, and Bear Scotland have a number of improvements in their programme for nearby Tomnahurich Street and Kenneth Street.

"We very much appreciate the willingness of Transport Scotland to consider road safety needs in this area, and the efficient way in which Bear Scotland have approached the installation works."
