Photographs of bins overflowing in an Inverness city centre car park have been shared online.

The bins at the TK Maxx car park in Strothers Lane are overflowing, with strewn litter surrounding them.

In reply to the photographs, Highland Council said the mess was on private land, and it should be reported or taken up with the land owners.

Twitter user, Peter says #StaySafe @duartlodge, challenged both Highland Council and TK Maxx to do something about the rubbish.

He wrote: "Hi @HighlandCouncil @TKMaxxHelp. Walking the footpath between the bus and railway stations Inverness, I observed this [the rubbish].

"Respectfully, once again the area is a midden. Overflowing bins almost a health hazard? What can be done in respect of enforcement?"

He continued: "Welcome to Inverness..."

Although next to TK Maxx the car park is operated by private firm Smart Parking.

Highland Council replied to his tweet: "Report litter at http://highland.gov.uk/report, or contact the land owner of this private car park and property."
