The world renowned Bealach na Bà mountain pass from Kishorn to Applecross has been closed as a precaution by Highland Council after heavy snows
The Highlands’ most famous mountain pass will be closed overnight after being hit by heavy snow.
Highland Council say the single track Bealach na Bà C1087 route in Wester Ross from Kishorn to Applecross will be re-assessed in the morning.
Renowned for the steepest ascent of any road in the UK at 2,054 feet, the former cattle drovers’ road features sharp hairpin twists and turns and gradients approaching 17 per cent.
It was recently voted one of the world’s top 10 most dangerous roads in a study by insurers.
A Highland Council spokesman said: “The Bealach na Bà road to Applecross is closed overnight due to snow.
“Travel with extreme care on other routes in the West Highlands due to wintry conditions.”
The spokesman said the Achiltibuie Road C1047 from A832 Drumunie is currently only passable with 4x4 vehicles and warned to “use extreme caution”.
The A833 Culnakirk Road between Beauly and Drumnadrochit has also been deemed impassable and is now closed to traffic, Police Scotland say.
This comes as a yellow warning for snow and ice is currently in place across the Highlands and Moray.
Police also warned: “Some areas with higher ground have experienced fairly significant snowfall today, with the forecast saying more is to come.
“Highland Council and BEAR Scotland are deploying snowploughs and gritters along the key routes and the trunk road network, however they can't be everywhere all the time so please drive appropriately to the conditions.”
