Inverness Musical Theatre's Legally Blonde Eden Court stage show gets some legal aid from local law firm Munro & Noble

One of the stage’s best known fictional lawyers is receiving support from her real life Highland counterparts ahead of her appearance at Eden Court.

Based on the hit Reese Witherspoon comedy from 2001, the musical version of Legally Blonde is being produced by local amateur company Inverness Musical Theatre.

Taking the lead role is Natalie Sutherland as Elle Woods, who gives up her laid back Southern California lifestyle to study at Harvard Law School, and reveals an unexpected flair for the legal profession.

Given the subject matter it was an obvious choice for some legal support and has now received sponsorship from Inverness law firm Munro & Noble.

Five out of the seven partners at the Church Street business are female, which remains an unusual proportion in the legal profession.

Partner Mary Nimmo – who, like star Natalie, hails from the village of Helmsdale – said: “We were really delighted to be able to support Inverness Musical Theatre.

“It’s lovely that a local theatre group is able to put on a production of that magnitude at Eden Court. We’ve already made a block booking and we are going to have a team evening out – we can’t wait!”

Though not the most authentic take on the US legal system, ever since its release, Legally Blonde has been credited with encouraging more young women to look at a law career, with star Reese Witherspoon quoted as saying that at least once a week she meets a woman who tells her she was inspired to go to law school by Elle’s story. This is something Munro & Noble can approve of.

“We take our responsibilities to recruitment seriously. We do a lot of placements and we regularly take on trainees and do our best to make sure there is gender equality in terms of our recruitment and salaries,” Mary added.

Legally Blonde runs at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, from Wednesday, March 30, to Saturday, April 2.
