Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been moved into intensive care after his condition "worsened," according to Downing Street.

Mr Johnson was initially admitted on Sunday evening to St Thomas' Hospital in London with "persistent symptoms" after he tested positive for the coronavirus.

He first confirmed that he tested positive for coronavirus in a social media post on March 27 but this evening Downing Street revealed that his medical team had recommended he be placed in an intensive care unit.

No 10 said in a statement: "The prime minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas' Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent symptoms of coronavirus.

"Over the course of the afternoon, the condition of the Prime Minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital.

"The Prime Minister has asked Dominic Raab, who is first secretary of state to deputise for him where necessary.

"The Prime Minister is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication."
