A Freedom of Information request has revealed that a senior government minister believes an independence referendum should be held before the end of 2021.

Papers reveal that the Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution, Europe and External Affairs, Michael Russell, when asked by the Australian High Commissioner, George Brandis QC about the timing of a referendum, confirmed he would hope a second referendum could be held by the end of 2021.

Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron said he was opposed to any such move.
