A VALIUM addict was taken to hospital by police because officers were concerned about his condition.

But John MacAskill (38), of Waterloo Place, Inverness was mistakenly given an anti-heroin drug and he reacted badly to it, his defence solicitor John MacColl told Sheriff Sara Matheson.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard MacAskill started shouting and swearing while waiting to be examined at Raigmore Hospital on July 6 last year and had to be restrained and handcuffed. However, he began kicking out and struck one officer on the leg. MacAskill admitted threatening behaviour and police assault.

Mr MacColl said: “Police arranged drug counselling for him after this and he tells me he has been drug free for some months.”

Fining MacAskill £470, Sheriff Sara Matheson told him: “You are at the stage now that you have to turn your life around.”
