A keen sense of smell cost an Inverness roofer his driving licence for four weeks and a £680 fine.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that police were on mobile patrol in the Torbreck Road area of the city with the driver's window open.

Fiscal depute Adelle Gray told the court that the driver detected a strong smell of cannabis in the area and they decided to check a white Kia Rio which was parked on the street.

After officers spoke to the driver - 26-year-old Jay Thomson, of Culduthel Mains Circle, Inverness - they spotted his eyes were glazed and the cannabis smell was coming from his vehicle.

He tested positive for cannabis with a reading of 3.8mcgs of the drug in his system when the legal driving limit is 2mcgs.

Thomson admitted being in charge of his car while under the influence of drugs on May 10, 2023.

Defence solicitor Marc Dickson said his client relied on his licence as he drove 30,000-40,000 miles-a-year and he already had a three points endorsement.

Sheriff Gary Aitken decided on a short discretionary ban rather than more penalty points which could have attracted a six-month disqualification for Thomson.
