Highland and Islands Police Division has posted a warning of a parking fine scam going the rounds in the region.

"Scam email: please be aware of an email that is being sent out," the force warned over the weekend.

"Thankfully the receiver of this email brought it to police attention before paying it."

Recipients are falsely told the bill follows "the use of a vehicle of a road in the charging area which a charging scheme applies without payment of the appropriate charge..."

It then gives a spurious date and time.

The threat is made that unless money is paid within 28 days the fine will increase.
