Police have reminded drone pilots they must make themselves aware of flying legislation before using equipment in congested areas.

Officers in Nairn attended reports of a drone flying over residential areas in Nairn last Thursday (July 2).

A police spokeswoman said: "While we know that drones are becoming ever popular, we wish to remind members of the public that when operating a drone they must operate within the law and guidelines set out by the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services.

"You are classed as a pilot when flying a drone.

"It is the responsibility of each pilot to make themselves aware of the appropriate legislation and be aware of the importance of responsible flying, particularly around airports, congested areas such as towns, cities and villages and restricted airspace.

"If anyone has any questions about how and where to fly a drone safely, please check with the Civil Aviation Authority or Drone Safe websites. Links to safety applications can be found on the Drone Safe website."

She added: "Please observe people's privacy, adhere to the regulations and stay safe."
