Inverness home for young asylum seekers calls police after knife incident
A teenage asylum seeker tried twice to get a knife to fight with a fellow resident in his accommodation, Inverness Sheriff Court heard.
Ramyar Razay, an 18 year old Kurdish Iranian who should not have been drinking alcohol according to his religion, was intoxicated while attending a household meeting at the property on the west side of the River Ness.
It was being used to house other unaccompanied asylum seeking children, fiscal depute Martina Eastwood told Sheriff David Mackie after Razay admitted a charge of threatening behaviour.
Following the meeting, Razay wanted to go into town for some food and was being supervised by a social worker, who heard the immigrant make the initial threat, saying he had a knife.
Ms Eastwood went on: "He was made to put it back to the kitchen and said again he was going to get one of the other residents."
However the knife was discovered missing again a short time later on May 28 this year and support workers found it on Razay, so police were called.
Defending, John MacColl said: "He has been in the UK for nearly two years having arrived here in February 2024 and has never been in trouble. Social workers says he is normally very placid and kind and never shows signs of hurting anyone or aggression.
"He doesn't remember the incident because unusually he had been drinking alcohol."
Sheriff Mackie said: "I am troubled that twice you reached for a knife."
He deferred sentence until October 30 for a social work background report.
