High Life Highland (HLH) pipers and drummers performed a Beating Retreat at Inverness Leisure on Sunday.

The event was in the main hall and Norman Bolton, HLH's head of music development, said: “The geography of Highland has never been a barrier to allowing our young people to experience a variety of musical formats at the highest musical standards, and we now have a template for Beating Retreat which is already being developed for a 2023 event.

“Almost 30 pupils from various parts of the Highlands played sets, interspersed by a musical world tour from the event’s joint wind band consisting of members of Lochaber High School Senior Wind Band, Inverness Schools Wind Band and East Highland Concert Band.

“The concert was brought to a close when all the bands joined forces for a stunning rendition of Highland Cathedral, and having taken the Salute from Steve Walsh, chief executive of High Life Highland, the bands performed Scotland the Brave as the pipe band marched off.

“In his impromptu closing address Mr Walsh paid tribute to the performers and their HLH music instructors, thanking them for the exceptional level of talent on display and the time spent preparing.”

Beating Retreat is an iconic military parade dating back to the 1690s. The beating of the drum was originally used to order troops to break off fighting and withdraw.

It later signified the closing of the gates and called troops back to base.

These days it is ceremonial, but remains a popular element of events such as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and The Queen’s official birthday celebrations.
