HEAVY snow meant there was plenty of winter fun to be had for Highland families on Wednesday.
Sledges, snowballs and snowmen were the order of the day as young and old alike made the very most of the conditions.
And, with further Met Office weather warnings for more snow – including as much as 20cm to 40cm of fresh snowfalls on the very highest inland areas – winter’s icy grip looks set to continue for many.
A weather warning for snow tonight has been extended by forecasters and is now expected to remain in place until midday on Friday.
It is expected to hit Badenoch & Strathspey, as well as inland areas of Sutherland, Ross-shire and Inverness-shire. There’s even a chance of five to 10 centimetres of snow to lower levels, although there is uncertainty over whether this will be snow, sleet or rain in coastal areas.
A Met Office spokesman said: “Wet weather associated with Storm Christoph will push in from the North Sea and Moray Firth early on Thursday and turn to snow, even at modest elevations.
“Snow accumulations of 5-10cm are possible at low-levels whilst 10-20cm snow is likely above around 200m. In addition, strong winds will develop on Thursday, leading to blizzard conditions at times over higher ground, and icing on infrastructure, such as power lines.”
A separate warning for heavy rain will be in force for Caithness, Orkney and north-eastern Aberdeenshire at the same time as the snow warning.
