AN Inverness hair salon has walked off with a top gong at the inaugural Scottish Make-Up Awards.

Ego Hair Design won the make-up salon of the year trophy thanks to the hard work of resident make-up artist Sarah Mulder, from Nairn.

The 19-year-old has been at the Huntly Street salon for almost two years and is known for her talent in all areas of make-up – from Instagram-friendly flawless looks, to makeovers for older women, bridal and occasion make-up and Halloween art.

Miss Mulder, who was born in Nebraska but moved to the Highlands when she was five, said she first heard she had been shortlisted when she got a phone call at the beginning of the year.

However she and her fellow nominees missed out on a ceremony – due to be held in Glasgow – after it was called off due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: “This is the first year they have done make-up awards. It is nice to get the validation, I am so happy.”

Miss Mulder got interested in make-up thanks to her mother, Sally, who worked in the industry and initially taught herself with YouTube tutorials.

She then studied a HNC in fashion make-up at Inverness College UHI and graduated in October while working at the salon.

“The salon is so amazing, I have so many opportunities with them, at the moment I just want to stay there,” she said.

However, she added that she might like to eventually work in special effects make-up in the film industry and has the option of joining her father, Bill Mulder, who still lives in America.

Salon owner Caroline Sanderson said: “We’re incredibly proud to have picked up this award; Sarah worked on the team’s photoshoot for the British Hairdressing Awards in 2019 – her first hair shoot – which was a finalist for Scottish hairdresser of year, an exceptional achievement.

“She really can adapt to the client which is a rare talent, and it means we can offer group make-up lessons to any age demographic.”
