An Inverness-shire based adventurer has been pictured welcoming the Queen to Scotland.

Tom McClean, an ex SAS paratrooper, oversaw the gun salute at Edinburgh Castle today (Monday) as Her Majesty arrived for a stay at the Palace of Holyroodhouse

A spokeswoman for HM said: "The Queen has travelled to Scotland and took part in the Ceremony of the Keys at the Palace of Holyroodhouse this morning, accompanied by The Earl and Countess of Wessex and Forfar."

Mr McClean gained fame for numerous feats of endurance including staying on the island of Rockall from May 26 1985 to July 4 1985 - asserting the UK's claim to the mid-Atlantic island.

He was also the first man to row across the Atlantic solo from west to east in in 1969.
