Staff at Highland Hospice have shown their appreciation for their volunteer helpers with a public round of applause.

This is Volunteer Week and the hospice had been due to handing out a number of long service awards at Inverness Town House today, but the ceremony had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

Instead, this afternoon, staff gathered in the grounds to applaud the efforts of volunteers, some of whom have helped out at the hospice for decades.

Volunteer manager Maria Cuthbert said around 15 people took part to thank around 112 volunteers who, between them, have given a total of 1665 years of service.

She said: "Their dedication is just amazing, but so many can't be volunteering with us at the moment.

"They are desperate to come back and help. We are really missing them.

"This afternoon was to say thanks for all that they've done."

The hospice currently has more than 900 volunteers who help in the hospice building itself, in its 13 charity shops, as area fundraisers and at events.
