He had bumped into speaker John Lardner, who then fell to the ground as a result.

The Clean Up Your Act event was staged outside Barclays Bank, in Union Street, to show opposition to investment in fossil fuel financing.

Mr Lardner, who was unhurt following the incident said: “He didn’t say anything to me, but he bumped into me and I was knocked off my feet. The police were on to him straight away.”

He said he was impressed with the way the situation was handled and, otherwise, the event had been a success.

“It went extremely well. It was short but I think we got our message across,” he said. “There weren’t a huge amount of people watching but they stayed to watch the performance.”

The protest aimed to highlight the link between fossil fuels and the threat to the planet from climate change.
