THE festive season got off to its usual colourful start in Inverness at the weekend with the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights.

Hundreds gathered for the event on Sunday that saw a torchlight procession make its way from Crown Primary School to Inverness Town House.

Broadcaster Nicola McAlley, who joined the Provost and Santa to officially switching the lights on, said: "It's always a lovely parade to be involved with – it was great to see such a huge turnout as the marchers came down the hill to the High Street. The highlight for me is watching the faces of little ones as they see Santa approaching and waving to them – it really brings the magic of Christmas to life."

Inverness events manager Gerry Reynolds said: "We had a bumper crowd attend the event on Sunday with a record number of 187 torches in the procession. It was a spectacular sight. The countdown to Christmas is now well underway and we are now looking forward to our next event for the younger members of our community, our Winter Wonderland show in Whin Park on December 13 to 15."
