A BLAZE in Invergordon has been brought under control following a swift response from firefighters.

Flames from the incident this evening could be seen for miles around.

The alarm had been sounded at 7.08pm and related to an area of open land at Seabank Road.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said tonight that the stop notice had been given at 9.05pm.

A spokeswoman said two appliances remain at the scene.

There had been concern about the proximity of the blaze to an oil tank farm which is a landmark feature in the Easter Ross port town.

It's understood a local church offered sanctuary for anyone in the vicinity looking for a roof over their heads.

The cause of the fire is as yet unknown although it's understood an investigation is underway.

The town was hit by two fires within the space of a year at Park Primary. That destroyed much of the building and forced pupils at the school to relocate to alternative premises.
