Members of the Art Society of Inverness were delighted after their first in-person exhibition since 2019 opened last week.

Visitors can now view the latest artworks by Highland artists, which are on display at the Inverness Creative Academy in the former Midmills building as part of the society’s 77th annual summer exhibition.

The show runs until July 22.

Membership secretary, Kevin O’Neill, said the show features a varied and exciting range of work.

“The society concentrates on painted artwork using a variety of mediums – watercolour, acrylic, oils, pastels and mixed media,” he said.

“We have continued online painting days for members throughout the Covid pandemic, and have recently re-started Covid-compliant real classes and painting days as well as continuing online activities.

“Being able to hold a real exhibition, with 60 amateur and professional artists showing 164 paintings, has been a real achievement whilst working within Covid regulations and ensuring that visitors and volunteers can remain as safe as possible. This is important for members and also for Inverness in starting to return to a more normal life.”

The winner of this year’s President’s Prize is “River Conon after the Storm” by Jackie Thomson, which was selected by Liz Hoey.

It was chosen for the way it captured an atmospheric light and calmness, which drew the eye around the painting, and was described as a “must-have”work for above the mantelpiece.
