After days of heavy rain, people in Inverness enjoyed a dry and warmer day as the Highland Games returned to the city.

The atmosphere at Bught Park was sparkling, with people from all over the world eager to experience this celebration of Highland sports and culture.

Although Gladiator star Russell Crowe missed the invite to the clan tent – he will however be in Inverness for a gig later this month – the day was enjoyed by families and visitors, regulars and first-timers alike.

This year, alongside the rich programme of athletic and musical competitions on the day, the Games Committee arranged for the big top tent to be installed to add a programme of live music throughout the day.

In the evening, the tent played host to a ceilidh which was hoped to be record-breaking (final numbers on attendance are yet to be confirmed).

Another novelty was the cocktail bar provided by The Singleton.

Chieftain for the day, Lewis Gillies, opened the Games alongside Inverness Provost Glynis Campbell Sinclair and Games Committee Chair Angus Dick.

He said: “It’s great to see such a large crowd here today and I am very pleased to have been invited to be the chieftain here today.

“These games trace back, going at least 175 years back, and hopefully this year will be the biggest and the best of them all.”

He thanked the members of the committee for their hard work in making the day possible and the “stellar” support given to the event by the Highland Council and the City of Inverness, as well as armed forces charity SSAFA for their help in running the games on the day.
