PICTURES: A day of competition at the YESC Regional Celebration of STEM leads to success for pupils from the Inverness area

Youngsters from schools in Inverness and Ross-shire were named as winners after taking part in a recent event.
It was at Scottish School of Forestry and was SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs (YESC) Regional Celebration of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).
The full list of winners were:
• Primary STEM challenge winner: Avoch Primary;
• Secondary STEM challenge winner: Elgin High School;
• Climate smarter primary winner: Muirtown Primary;
• Climate smarter secondary winner: Culloden Academy;
• Primary regional club of the year winner: Kyleakin Primary;
• Secondary regional club of the year winner: Charleston Academy.
A total of 60 young people from both primary and secondary schools across Highland and Moray took part in the event which was in partnership with Confor, Crown Estate Scotland, The Scottish Forestry Trust and The Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Award.
The day featured schools showcasing their science and engineering projects and contending for competition prizes. Scottish School of Forestry UHI Inverness kindly hosted the event and provided the young people with an interactive tour to learn more about the varied careers available within the sector.
Eleanor O’Neill, Confor's communication manager, said: “Confor is proud to support the Young Engineers and Science Clubs as our ever-changing world calls for more young people to take an interest in STEM subjects.
“It was fantastic to attend the event at the Scottish School of Forestry and see what the primary and secondary pupils have been working on.
"The attention to real world problems and creativity in finding solutions was very impressive.
“All of the participating schools should be very proud, and we look forward to seeing more from them in the future.”
The event included a primary and secondary STEM competition, with industry volunteers and partners each providing a five-minute, hands-on challenge focusing on teamwork and problem solving.
The challenge doubles up as an opportunity to provide the young people with an insight into the different career paths available in the STEM industry.
