PICTURES: 2024 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running attracts almost 10,000 runners from around the world

Almost 10,000 runners have taken part in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running as it celebrated a record-breaking year of race times.

It was also a year of record participation numbers as runners from all around the world descended on the Highlands to take part.

This year’s event saw a record number of 5500 entries for the full marathon, 2430 the 10K, Corporate Challenge, and a record number of 1800 sign-ups to the River Ness 5K, and the children's Wee Nessie race. The organisers said the spirit of the event was palpable as runners of all ages and abilities embraced the challenge, from seasoned athletes to first timers and those running in support of charity.

Moray Pryde from Lothian Running Club crossed the finish line setting a new course record of 02:19:26, showcasing his exceptional speed and endurance to break a record that has stood since 2009.

Meanwhile, Melissah Gibson from Ealing Eagles Running Club claimed victory once again in the women's race with a remarkable time of 2:54:39, solidifying her reputation as one of the top marathon runners in Scotland and the first female winner for both 2023 and 2024.

Logan Rees of Fife Athletics Club secured first place in the men’s 10K category securing a new course record time of 00:28:52.

Caitlin Heggie of Inverness Harriers claimed the top spot as the first female to cross the 10K finish line with a time of 00:35:50.

Title sponsor Baxters Food Group won the 10K Corporate Challenge with an accumulative time of 02:34:20.

In the River Ness 5K race. Billy Sutherland from Ross County AC clocked in at an exceptional time of 16:15, showcasing his speed across the course. Not far behind, Millie Glass Park from Young Meldrum Runners won the women’s category with a strong finish of 17:55.

Olympian, Megan Keith attended the event as the official starter of the River Ness 5K and presented runners with their 5K medals following the race

Malcolm Sutherland, race director for Baxters Loch Ness Marathon said: “Every year, the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running brings together an incredible community of runners, supporters, and volunteers, all united by a love for this beautiful event.

“The Festival of Running not only showcases the breathtaking scenery of the Highlands but also the determination and spirit of our participants. We are delighted to celebrate all of this year’s participants and deeply appreciate everyone who contributed to making this weekend a success."

Audrey Baxter, executive chairman of Baxters Food Group, the event's title sponsor, praised the atmosphere and success of the event.

"It's incredible to witness the sense of community and determination that defines the Loch Ness Marathon every year,” she said.

“This year’s record turnout is a testament to the marathon’s growing appeal and the spirit of the Highlands. Well done to everyone who participated this year. "

Macmillan Cancer Support, the official charity partner, also expressed its gratitude to the 200 participants running for a cause.

Jimmy Holland, challenge events programme manager, said: “Huge congratulations to all our Team Macmillan runners who came, and conquered Baxters Loch Ness Marathon 2024.

“You're all amazing, and a huge thank you for choosing to run for Macmillan Cancer Support, and making the miles count for people living with cancer across the UK.

“We hope all our runners feel incredibly proud and are enjoying some well-earned rest after their massive achievement.”

In addition to the races, the weekend was filled with festivities, including unmissable Q&A’s hosted by BBC’s Bryan Burnett with industry experts, expo, live music, pipes and drums, local food stalls, and family-friendly activities, making it a celebration of both fitness and community spirit.

With yet another record-breaking year, the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon continues to solidify its place as one of the most iconic and eagerly anticipated events on the UK sporting calendar.
