210-mile Highland bike ride raises money for Malawi school girls

A BIKE ride around the Highlands has become a money-spinner to help pay the school fees for 138 girls in Malawi.
With 15 people in the Black Isle signed up for the 210-mile ride in aid of Scottish charity, the Mamie Martin Fund (MMF), the Highlanders are putting the charity on the map.
MMF, a charity which supports girls’ education in Malawi, came up with the idea of asking volunteers to cycle 210 miles, the equivalent distance of a fundraising event that had to be cancelled this weekend due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
Cyclists have been clocking up the miles around the region while wearing yellow T-shirts.
Jean Gordon and Richard Robinson from Fortrose decided to take on the gruelling challenge and then got their friends involved. Their son James and his partner Lucy, who live in England, also signed up for the event and travelled to Scotland to do the miles.
Ms Gordon said: “Knowing that our travels are raising awareness of the importance of girls education in Malawi, as well as funds to enable girls in poverty to go to school, has made those journeys, however short or meandering, even more worthwhile.
“Our fundraising has really caught the imagination of friends and family.”
It costs up to £350 a year to support each of the girls who benefit from the charity.
