The organisers of the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running have announced the cancellation of this year's children's Wee Nessie event.

The popular event for children aged five and under was due to take place alongside the marathon and other races on October 3.

But a message on the event's website states: "It is with great sadness that we have taken the decision to cancel the Wee Nessie in 2021.

"Our focus this year will be the safe delivery of the marathon, 10K and 5K and we are working closely with our local authority and stakeholders to deliver an amazing event experience for everyone involved while doing everything we can to keep everyone safe.

"We know this will be disappointing news for your child/ren and there is nothing we love more than seeing their wee smiling faces proudly showing off their medals, and we can’t wait to see them again in 2022."

The organisers say entry fees will be refunded in full to the original payment method and will be processed within 14 days.

The Wee Nessie, which follows an 800m circular route in the enclosed Bught Park, allows children to walk, jog or run at their own pace and provides the perfect introduction to the sport.

The festival is also a major fundraising event for various charities.
