The number of families accessing school uniform support from local charities has increased.

As children go back to school this week, more parents in Inverness have reached out for school uniform support from local charities.

One charity has seen a 24 per cent increase in the number of referrals for school uniforms this year compared to 2023.

Highland Action for Little Ones (Halo) supports children and families in need across the Highlands by providing essential items.

A spokesperson from Halo said: “[We’re] sad to say that we have seen a small increase in the number of referrals for school uniforms this year compared with 2023.

“Last year we had 58 referrals for uniforms which included school shoes, to date, we have had 72 referrals for uniforms.

“Each request includes a full school uniform, school shoes, back-to-school items such as school bags, gym shoes and within some referrals a school jacket.”

With the support of local communities and businesses, Halo has been able to meet the demand and ensure every child is ready for the start of the new term.

InSpire, a charity through Inverness Cathedral has also seen an increase in people reaching out for school uniform support from previous years.

It has provided school uniform packs for almost 200 children this summer.

Sandra Wratten of InSpire, said: “The local community has continued to support our project by donating new and preloved school uniform and school stationery which is greatly appreciated.

“Families in need of extra support can still request school uniform by emailing inspires@invernesscathedral.org or calling 01463 225553.”

Highland Council also offers school uniform support alongside free school meals to eligible families.

A Highland Council spokesperson said: “The Highland Council assesses applications for free school meals and assistance with clothing in line with eligibility criteria set by the Scottish Government.”
