A suspected Norovirus outbreak has forced the closure of an Inverness primary and nursery school.

It is understood repeated cases of the highly-infectious winter vomiting bug at Kinmylies Primary and Nursery prompted Highland Council and headteacher Faye Lingard to order staff and pupils to stay at home.

The school has a roll of 304 pupils, with 67 pre-school children attending the early learning centre.

The number of youngsters and staff affected has not been disclosed.

A deep clean of the entire school has since been ordered, to be completed over the weekend in an effort to stop the spread of the illness which causes sickness and diarrhoea.

Noroviruses can transmitted from person to person by surfaces and via contaminated water and food.

A parent told us earlier today: “We knew there were lots of the kids coming down with something very nasty and we’ve now been told it is Norovirus.

“Hopefully they can nip it in the bud because by all accounts it has been very unpleasant for those affected.”

A Highland Council spokeswoman confirmed: “Kinmylies Primary School and ELC has closed Thursday, May 22 and Friday May 23 due to public health measures associated with suspected Norovirus circulating.

“The school will be thoroughly cleaned over the coming days and parents/carers are reminded that should their child feel unwell or experience any vomiting or diarrhoea then they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of being unwell.

“The school has issued a leaflet from NHS Highland for information and guidance, and it is hoped that the school will re-open on Monday, May 26.”
