FOUR new cases of Covid-19 were detected in the NHS Highland area in the past 24 hours.

The cumulative number of positive tests in the region since the beginning of the pandemic rose from 630 to 634 when the Scottish Government published its latest daily update at 2pm.

Across Scotland there were 222 new positive tests for Covid-19 – or 6.9 per cent of all those tested.

The figure was down on recent days, but First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urged caution, stressing that the lower number of cases could be due to the "weekend effect" – where testing levels are usually not as high as on weekdays.

Nationally, there were 122 people in Scottish hospitals last night with recently confirmed Covid-19 – up 17 from the previous day. The number in intensive care also increased, rising four to 16.

No new coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the past 24 hours.

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, the recent cluster of cases in the Outer Hebrides continued on Monday, with nine new cases reported overnight. It has now had 26 positive tests since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Northern Isles, meanwhile, detected no fresh cases in the past 24 hours, and posted unchanged totals on Monday.

NHS Grampian recorded 13 new positive tests in the past day – to take its overall total to 2221.

And NHS Tayside had 14 fresh cases, for a running total of 2433 since the start of the pandemic.

There have been 27,798 positive tests in Scotland since the outbreak began earlier this year.
