A Highland-wide charity supporting young adults with additional support needs has a new set of wheels thanks to a generous donation from the Highland Cross.

Cantraybridge College, based in Croy, unveiled its new Ford Transit 17-seater minibus on Friday – a new resource its CEO says will “make a real difference” in its efforts to develop and support students.

With 70 to 100 students benefiting from Cantraybridge’s services each week, reliable transport is essential in ensuring access to education, health services, and social opportunities.

The specialist college, who provide education and housing support for young people with disabilities aged 16-30, says the new bus will be used daily for student transport and will also help residential students with shopping trips, medical appointments, and their annual holiday which this year includes a trip to Ayr.

Students will also be able to take part in outdoor education and social activities, helping them to develop independence and get involved in a full range of activities both within and beyond the college.

The new minibus joins an existing fleet of vehicles, which includes two smaller minibuses, a wheelchair-accessible bus, and a 17-seater, with previous minibuses donated by Highland Cross in 2012 and 2018.

Cantraybridge have maintained a long-standing connection with the Highland Cross over the years, not only as a beneficiary but as enthusiastic supporters of the event.

Each year, staff and students take their minibus to the Forest Boundary water station to cheer on competitors and assist in keeping them fuelled and hydrated.

Hazel Clark, CEO of Cantraybridge said: "The whole team at Cantraybridge is extremely grateful to Highland Cross for the donation of a minibus to help us deliver services to young adults with additional support needs across the Highlands.

"The Highland Cross has been incredibly generous over the years, and this latest donation will make a real difference to the people we support.

“A huge thank you to everyone who takes part in this challenging event—you make a real impact on charities like ours."

The Highland Cross is a coast-to-coast duathlon that takes place annually in the Highlands, raising funds for local charities that provide medical and social support services.

Over the years, the gruelling 50-mile endurance event has raised millions of pounds, helping organisations like Cantraybridge College enhance their services and support those in need.
