Councillors have agreed to grant planning permission for what is likely to be the largest primary school in the region – despite concerns over the provision of parking and drop-off facilities.

Highland Council’s south planning applications committee agreed to the local authority’s own submission to create a long-awaited new primary school and nursery in the Ness Castle area.

The first phase will see 12 classrooms for 333 primary school pupils and three playrooms for 128 nursery pupils built alongside secure outdoor learning spaces, sports pitches and an indoor sports hall.

The second phase will add another 12 classrooms – for an additional 326 pupils – and another two nursery playrooms for a further 64 pupils.

Some councillors said the 37 parking places for the planned 40 staff – plus parents on the school run – indicated that traffic chaos would ensue. It was resolved by agreeing for local members to meet officers to allay potential concerns.
