FILMS with a literary connection are being screened for free in a new venture for Inverness’s annual book festival.

The screenings, at Eden Court, feature in a varied programme of events at this year’s NessBookFest, which runs until tomorrow (October 5).

A committee spokeswoman said the showings will take place over three consecutive evenings with one day daytime screening.

“All films are related to books in some way so it’s a really exciting new angle to what we’re doing,” she said.

Following on from last night's 1998 romantic comedy, You’ve Got Mail, tonight’s showing will be Fahrenheit 451 made in 1966. Based on Ray Bradbury’s dystopian tale, it portrays a controlled world in which books are prohibited and all copies found must be set on fire by order of the oppressing government.

The 2017 film, The Bookshop, will be screened on Saturday night. It relates the story of a woman who risks everything to open a bookshop in a conservative coastal town.

Despite ruthless local opposition, she succeeds in exposing the local community to cutting-edge books.

Sunday’s NessBookFest wind-down film will be Ex-libris: The New York Public Library.

Released in 2017, it goes behind the scenes of one of the world’s greatest knowledge institutions and looks at how it contributes to the formation of its citizens’ culture and knowledge.

Entry to the films will be free in keeping with festival policy of not charging for events but tickets must be booked via the Eden Court website.
