FILMING and photographing children was banned during a nativity play at an Inverness nursery following objections from other parents.

Children attending the nursery at Balloch Primary School performed the Christmas story on Thursday in front of parents, grandparents and family members.

But the school had warned them beforehand that the occasion must not be captured on film — although they were allowed to take photographs of their children afterwards.

One disappointed grandfather said he had spoken to other parents who felt the ruling was "a bit silly". "It deprives parents, siblings, grandparents, who cannot attend for various reasons, and also the children themselves of seeing, or having any record of an occasion that is part of their life," he said. "If it continues through the years, it could lead to parents not having any record of their child’s involvement in school whatsoever."

A Highland Council spokeswoman said some parents did not wish photographs or videos of their children to be taken at school events for various reasons.

"Parents were offered an opportunity to photograph their own children at the end and the school has filmed the performance so parents unable to attend can come in and watch it as well as the others in the school," she said.

Anyone who missed the performance can also see the children at the Eastgate Centre on Sunday.
