NAIRN VOICES: Striving to keep ‘heart of community’ beating strong
By Rhona MacDonald, manager, Nairn Community & Arts Centre
“No two days are the same”: that’s one thing I find myself saying often since starting my role as manager at the Nairn Community and Art Centre. Whether it's the buzz of art exhibitions, the rhythm of the different genres of music rehearsals, or the laughter from community classes, our centre is always brimming with life.
Not many will know that the centre is a stand-alone charity, run by a dedicated voluntary board of directors and a small, passionate team who keep the place open daily from morning until late - 361 days a year. Our mission is simple: to keep the heart of Nairn beating strong by providing a creative, welcoming and inclusive space for all. It’s way more than just a building.
It’s been a really tough time to access funding for creative venues and community centres recently, not just in the Highlands but country wide. Trying to balance keeping a community space affordable for local groups and charities vs. keeping a well maintained, heated and bright building functioning each and every day of the year can be a financial struggle.

Over the summer, we’ve been working hard to expand our future art programmes. Thanks to the support of Creative Scotland, we’re developing a new ‘Creative Hub’ that we hope will be a home for local artists, aspiring creators, and anyone who loves to get involved with the arts. From exhibitions to classes, it’s exciting to offer even more opportunities for our community to come together.
We’re also thrilled to announce that we’ve secured funding from the Davidson Trust to replace the ageing sound equipment in our theatre. This upgrade will make a huge difference to the quality of performances and events we can host, ensuring that audiences and performers alike enjoy the best possible experience.
Recently, we also had the incredible opportunity to host a gig and workshop with the legendary singer and songwriter Horse. It was an unforgettable weekend for both the audience and the participants. For us, this is just an example of the special and enriching events we strive to bring to the centre.
The next couple of months are packed with fantastic events: from classical music to jazz, cinema screenings and talks, topping it all with a Christmas panto and much more, we want to make sure there’s a little something for every interest.
Of course, like any charity, we rely on the generosity of our friends and supporters to keep the lights on (and the creativity flowing!). You can help us keep Nairn Community & Arts Centre at the heart of our community through our 50/50 Prize Draw, entering for our ‘Annual Pass for 2025’ ticket draw, becoming a Patron Supporter, a Corporate Supporter or even voting for us at the Coop Community online fund (No. 91398) - every little bit helps!
So, whether you’re popping in for a community class, a meeting, catching a concert, or admiring the latest art exhibition, we look forward to welcoming everyone in the community - whose support is vital for us to continue to make every day at the centre just as unique and exciting as the last.
