Nairn teen fulfils dream of teaching English in China thanks to support from The Regimental Trust

A teenager from Nairn has set off on the adventure of a lifetime after receiving support from The Regimental Trust.

18-year-old Grace Millar is now living in Jiujiang City, China, where she is spending a year teaching English to young students through a placement with the educational charity Project Trust.

Grace’s journey is especially poignant. Her father, Sergeant Stuart ‘Gus’ Millar, served with The Royal Regiment of Scotland before tragically passing away when Grace was just two years old.

When she faced a shortfall in her fundraising target to take part in the volunteer programme, she reached out to The Regimental Trust, which supports soldiers, veterans, and the families of those who served.

Their contribution helped Grace close the final gap in her £7,450 fundraising goal, allowing her to embark on her long-held ambition.

“I did bake sales, car washes, and school events - anything I could think of to raise money to support my efforts,” Grace said.

“By June, I had managed to raise around £6,000, but I still needed to close the gap. That’s when my mum suggested we reach out to the Regimental Trust to see if they would support me, which they did. Their help gave me the final push I needed and it meant I could finally make my dream a reality.

She added: “This year will be life changing. I want to soak it all up and really make the most of the support I’ve been given - and knowing Dad is part of the story makes it even more special.”

The Regimental Trust often assists serving soldiers and veterans, but it also provides crucial help to bereaved families, ensuring that the legacy of those who served continues to inspire.

Major Ian Cordiner, Welfare Officer at Regimental Headquarters, said:

“Grace’s story reminds us of the wider responsibilities of The Regimental Trust and the role we play. Her father, Sergeant Stuart ‘Gus’ Millar, served with pride and dedication - qualities that clearly shine through in Grace.

“It is a privilege for us to be able to support her as she takes on this journey.”

Now several weeks into her stay, Grace is teaching spoken English to middle school pupils, helping them build confidence in their language skills while learning basic Mandarin herself. She’s also immersing herself in Chinese culture and exploring some of the country’s most famous landmarks.

Looking ahead, Grace hopes to study oral health at university when she returns to Scotland. But for now, she’s focused on making the most of her experience.
