Nairn's Millbank Primary School uses technology to share success of pupils at annual prize giving

Millbank Primary School in Nairn have used computer technology to circulate a recording of their 2021 prize-giving to staff and pupils.

The event was held before the school broke up for the summer holidays and was then posted on Google classroom for pupils and staff to watch.

Head teacher Maria McPherson and Depute Head teacher Pauline Thomson presented the service with all P7 pupils and teachers in attendance.

The traditional bible reading from Proverbs was read in Gaelic by George Hibberd and Hannah Wiseman and then in English by Cayla Macleman and Kayleigh Boylan.

The sports championship winners and runners-up were then announced.

Pupils in P4-7 compete in 5 events during the summer term – high jump, long jump, shot putt, 80m sprint and 80m skipping.

Points are then awarded to the pupils with the best three results in each event and totals calculated to determine the winners.

This year’s winners and runners-up:

P4 Girls champion – Abbie Smart, runner-up Iona Thompson

P4 Boys champion - Moray Robertson, runner-up Ethan Grigor.

P5 Girls champions Olivia Anderson and Avia Fraser, runners-up Iona Mackintosh and Isla Morrison.

P5 Boys champions James Baxter, runner-up Devon Barclay

P6 Girls champion Sienna Clark, runners-up Rhea Fraser and Emma Whitelaw.

P6 Boys champion Tom French, runner-up Robbie Alderson

P7 Girls champion Caitlyn Smith, runner-up Isabela Kari.

P7 Boys champion Gregor Williamson, runner-up Callum Thompson

The George Soutar (former janitor) Burma Cup for pupils who show commitment to taking care of the school grounds and garden areas was awarded to P2/3 teacher Mrs McLean and her pupils who have done a terrific job of maintaining the school garden this session.

Mrs Marion Mackay, former headteacher, donated a trophy to the school on her retirement – The Marion Mackay award for literacy.

The recipient of this award is Ayla Dewar.

Ayla is a member of the school's Gaelic medium class and excels in Gaelic and English literacy.

On her retirement, Ellen McPherson donated a trophy to the school – the Ellen McPherson award for endeavour. The recipient of this award was Katie Gillies who has greatly impressed staff by overcoming difficulties and always showing total commitment to all aspects of learning.

The Citizenship Cup is recognised as being a conscientious and hard-working pupil who contributes fully to all aspects of school life, being kind and helpful and setting a good example to others. This year's winner was was Tori Nicol.

Mrs McPherson paid tribute to all pupils, staff and families for their continued hard work and resilience during another challenging year.

Tribute was also paid to Mrs Thomson who is stepping down as Depute Head teacher and to Ms MacLennan, GM 1-3 teacher, who is leaving at the end of term.

A calculator was presented to all P7 pupils and the service concluded with a rendition of the ‘Leaver’s Song’, a song that has been sung by staff and pupils at Milbank for the last few years to wish P7s well as they move on to secondary school.
