Nairn choir’s fundraiser hits right note for local causes
A popular Nairn choir raised close to £800 to support people struggling with dementia and adults with additional needs.
The Accidentals Acapella Choir held its annual Summer Concert in June to support Nairn Alzheimer's Group and The Meeting Place in Culloden.
Choir secretary Cath Stevens, said it was great to perform in front of a “packed and appreciative audience” to support the good causes.
She said: “ Wendy Strath, musical director had chosen a range of favourite songs and some quirky new ones such as the Gary Barlow hit Sing, the haunting Vuellie from Frozen 2 and the Spice Girls Wannabe, done in Elizabethan Madrigal Style.
“Stealing the show however was Tenor Andy Price, who appeared in costume as King George III to sing You’ll be Back from the stage show Hamilton to rapturous applause. “
Choir members nominate a charity of their choice when they join the choir and 2 charities are randomly selected for each concert.
Linda Gordon, who chose the local group supporting people with dementia, said that her sister has dementia and her late husband had it too.
”It helps if they can get support and join in activities,” she said.
Choir member Pam Shaw nominated The Meeting Place, Culloden in memory of the choir’s late member Morag Bannigan.
Accepting the cheque from Linda on behalf of Alzheimer Scotland, Julie Ferguson, dementia adviser said: “Dementia does not yet have a cure, but people can be supported to live well with dementia for many years. Our thriving community groups in Nairn provide therapeutic activity and peer support for people affected by dementia.
“A group attendee caring for a family member with dementia recently said of the community group, ‘I’ve found my safe space to talk about all this.’.
“This generous donation will help us do everything possible to be there for people affected by dementia whenever, and wherever they need us.”
Gill Sutherland, manager at the Meeting place - a hub for adults with additional needs to share their skills and talents and get together - said the generous donation will help towards interior renovations.
