Nairn has been ranked as having one of the best beaches in the country based on the sands themselves as well as other criteria.

In a nationwide survey, Nairn was scored on the beach as well as fish and chips, the price of a pint and the temperature.

On its beach score alone, it was among the top seven in the UK but also ranked eighth for the best Scottish seaside resorts.

The news was welcomed by business leaders in the town which has recently rebranded itself as ‘Scotland’s Highland Playground’ due to its diverse range of activities, events, history and culture.

Lucy Harding, manager of Nairn Business Improvement District, was thrilled and said it was no surprise given the town had three white sandy beaches.

“This, coupled with the fact that Nairn has fab fish and chip shops, a seafront promenade, great eateries offering ice cream, and locally sourced seafood, and a town centre with bespoke craft and gift shops, restaurants and cosy pubs, means it really is a great place for tourists and locals alike,” she said.

“It’s also one of the sunniest and driest places in Scotland so enjoying the beach is easy and the climate makes it an ideal base for walking, cycling and touring the Highlands.”

Girvan in south Ayrshire topped the Scottish league table in the survey carried out by UK solar light company, The Solar Centre, as Britons increasingly look to plan a domestic summer getaway due to coronavirus restrictions.

Dornoch – the other Highland beach in the 12 Scottish beaches analysed – was in 10th place.

A total of 91 UK resorts were examined using statistical analysis. Criteria included water temperature and parking.

Deal in Kent achieved the top overall score followed by Penarth in Wales and Southwold in Suffolk.

Some Scottish beaches dominated the bottom of the UK league table mainly due to lower scores in the climate categories.
