Nairn actor Nicholas Ralph, who stars in the latest version of screen favourite All Creatures Great And Small, has been nominated for the TV Times Awards best newcomer prize.

The young actor stars as the late vet and bestselling writer James Herriot in the series which premiered on Channel 5 at the start of the month.

In a category of six, Nicholas Ralph is up against Masali Baduza, in Noughts + Crosses, Jack Bardoe, in Belgravia, Mirren Mack in The Nest, Tanya Maniktala in A Suitable Boy and Paul Mescal in Normal People.

Nicholas (30) – speaking just before the show screened for the first time – said he was thrilled to be working with actors such as Samuel West who plays James’s eccentric boss Siegried Farnon and acting legends Dame Diana Rigg – who sadly died recently – and Nigel Havers who has appeared in everything from Chariots Of Fire to Coronation Street.

“There’s no better way as an actor to learn than through experience and also just being on set with these people and watching them work,” Nicholas said.

The first episode of the drama was watched by 3.3 million viewers according to the TV industry’s Broadcast magazine, which also revealed All Creatures Great And Small's first episode smashed previous Channel 5 drama records.
