INVERNESS man Colin Campbell has said he is deferring his decision to end his life in favour of exploring alternative treatments for MS.

Mr Campbell suffers from primary progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and went public last month with his decision to travel to the Lifecircle Clinic in Switzerland to end his own life rather than face an unbearable decline.

Now, however, he has said he has “deferred” that decision in favour of exploring stem cell treatment.

“It was someone who spoke to my landlord and suggested I look into this,” he said.

“I just thought it wouldn’t be right to give it a try at least and so that is a possibility.”

The former IT consultant was diagnosed with MS in 1995 and says he now struggles to cope with living in his first floor flat in the city centre’s Queensgate.

He has spoken out about his belief that people should have the right to die in Scotland and also recently took up the call for better support for people, living with terminal health conditions.

He insisted that his latest decision is about deferral rather than cancellation and said there would need to be “obvious signs” of improvement in terms of other treatments for him to change his mind completely.

Mr Campbell was recently befriend by fellow Inverness MS sufferer Rona Tynan who said she was absolutely delighted with his decision.

“My first job when I met Colin, I felt, was just to get him to see the alternatives to the path he was going down and it feels like we’re at that point now which is just great,” she said.

Ms Tynan also recently issued a plea via Facebook for suggestions of “lovely things” Colin could do to remind him how good life can be. Email newsdesk@spp-group.com with ideas and we will pass details on.
