The awards are being organised by Scottish Provincial Press (SPP) to honour the local heroes within our communities and have captured the imagination of readers across the Highlands, with more than 6000 online votes and 130 postal votes so far.

Mr Hendry, the SNP MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, tabled his motion in the House of Commons on October 18.

It has been supported by 15 MPs including the SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford, whose constituency is Ross, Skye and Lochaber.

The motion states: “That this House commends the Scottish Provincial Press for its Highland Heroes Awards scheme which aims to recognise those in the Highlands who make a real difference to communities, healthcare, education, safety and wellbeing; recognises that all those nominated are dedicated, hard-working individuals; congratulates those who have been shortlisted for an award; and wishes those who have been shortlisted the best of luck at the awards night in Inverness on November 9.”

The awards are being promoted through the Inverness Courier and four other SPP newspapers – the Ross-shire Journal, Northern Times, John O’Groat Journal and Strathspey & Badenoch Herald.

Shortlisted nominees in the 12 categories were featured in a 20-page supplement earlier this month which contained personal stories of bravery, determination, commitment and community spirit.

Nominations had been submitted from throughout the region before our five-strong judging panel drew up a shortlist in each category.

Businesses and organisations have been keen to support the awards through sponsorship of the various categories.

If you have not voted yet, you have until Monday to do so.

Andy Dixon, content editor at the Courier, said: “Every one of the finalists is worthy of winning. Choosing one in each category is tough.”

To pick your favourites in each category, go to www.inverness-courier.co.uk/heroes – the online voting process is quick and easy.

After Monday’s deadline all the online votes will be added to the postal votes and the winners will be announced at a grand ceremony in the Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness, on November 9. All those who have been shortlisted are being invited to attend.

Tickets are available priced £40 per person.
