Bomb disposal experts were called in to deal with a mortar bomb found on a Highland beach.

A metal detectorist unearthed the two-inch piece of ordnance at Milton of Culloden at noon on Monday and informed the coastguard, who then reported the matter to explosive ordnance specialists in the Royal Navy.

Unable to determine the exact nature of the device from photographs, a team was sent to the scene to carry out a controlled explosion, assisted by the Nairn and Inverness Coastguard teams.

A 50m cordon was established around the scene and while a first attempt to blow the mortar up was unsuccessful, it was destroyed following a second attempt and the operation concluded at around 7.15pm.
