IT has taken eight years of daily backcombing, gelling and spraying to maintain Rory Cormack’s mohican hairstyle, but it took just one minute and 34 seconds for the whole look to disappear in one go.

The 17-year-old Nairn Academy pupil decided to dispense with his distinctive look before he heads off to university later this year.

But he also used the occasion to raise £1400 for the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Rory, who lives with his mother Kirstine Finlayson in Cawdor, first adopted the style aged nine after reading about the world’s longest mohican and although he did not break the record, the spikes stayed.

After having them shaved off to rousing applause from the entire school, Rory admitted it felt really strange.

“I am missing it but I am not regretting it,” he said.

“I am going to grow my hair a little bit longer but not too much. I am definitely not going to grow back a mohican.”

Both he and his mother are looking forward to gaining an extra 10 minutes each morning now that his hair does not have to be styled.

Ms Finlayson, an accounts manager for haulage contractor R & F Campbell, said the support for Rory’s fundraiser had been “amazing”.

“It has been absolutely fantastic,” she said.

“His new look will take a bit of getting used to. Immediately afterwards, we both looked at each other and said, ‘no hair’.

“I am going to keep a bit of it. All this hard work for the eight years and this is all I have to show for it!”
