TEMPERATURES as low as -15C could hit parts of the Highlands in the coming days, a regional forecaster has warned amid new weather alerts from the Met Office.

Lee Schofield, who runs the Highland Weather site (@highlandweather on Twitter and Highlands and Islands Weather on Facebook), is predicting a “run of very cold nights”.

His comments came just an hour before the Met Office issued yet another yellow warning for snow and ice in parts of the Highlands.

The latest warning kicked into effect at 4pm on Friday and will remain in placed until 10.30am on Saturday.

In the Highlands it covers all of Caithness and Sutherland, much of central and western Ross-shire, as well as western Inverness-shire, Lochaber and parts of the Great Glen.

The alert also covers all of the Northern and Western Isles, the entire west coast of mainland Scotland and extends down into Northern Ireland, Wales and north-western and southern parts of England.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Showers will continue at times across many areas, these largely of rain and sleet at low levels across southern England and southern Wales and near coasts but will be of sleet and snow elsewhere.

“These will bring a cover of snow in places. One to three centimetres could accumulate at low levels, mostly across Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England but as much as five to 10 centimetres of additional snow may accumulate at higher levels of these areas.

“Clear skies between showers will also bring the threat of ice.”

Meanwhile, commenting on weather through the weekend and into next week, Highland Weather’s Lee Schofield, said: “A run of very cold nights coming from this weekend into early next week.

“I suspect somewhere up here could well see -15C."

The warnings come as the Scottish Avalanche Information Service warned of a 'considerable' risk of avalanche in the Cairngorms and Ross-shire mountains.
