THE Victorian Market is to retain its name thanks to public opinion and a survey run by the Inverness Courier.

There could be a move to reconsider a new name in the future however, after planned refurbishments in and around the market are completed.

Last year while looking at rebranding, consultants Tristram Woolston Design proposed a new name and this found favour with market manager Jo Murray and some traders.

She said at the time: “The consultant identified problems with the existing name, in that the building and its environment doesn’t strongly present Victorian qualities and it’s not a ‘market’ as such, but has permanent enclosed retail units rather than changeable stalls.”

A meeting of the Victorian Market stakeholders/traders group recently spent some time discussing the name, and various opinions were put forward.

Ms Murray circulated copies of a presentation given to stakeholders when it was suggested that the new name should be Inverness Old Town Arcade as there was a move to describe the Academy Street area as the Old Town.

However the meeting heard that in August last year the Inverness Courier ran a public survey and it was an overwhelming “no” to changing the name.

City manager David Haas stated that the name is important, but the key is what people want from the market, and the responses received helped to identify this.

Some felt the Old Town does not have a strong enough identity in Inverness.

The group agreed to retain the name Victorian Market as all felt it was not the right time to change it.
