An Inverness man who sparked a serious incident by waving a toy gun that could be mistaken for a real weapon, appeared from custody at the city’s sheriff court today.

Alan Craig (57) of Muirtown Street admitted behaving in a threatening manner on February 7 this year by brandishing the toy gun at his home, at members of the public, at passing vehicles on nearby Kenneth Street and even at a police response vehicle arriving at the scene.

The charge stated his behaviour caused members of the public to think that “the toy gun may be a loaded firearm.”

Sheriff Sara Matheson deferred sentence for criminal justice and social work reports and Craig returned to custody where he is being held on a separate matter.

A plea of not guilty was accepted to a charge alleging that on the day before the gun incident Craig had shouted and swore and brandished a hammer above his head at his address.

Craig must reappear for sentence on July 18 when fiscal deput Morton will give details of the incident, and the defence will give its plea in mitigation.
