An upsetting remark towards a teenager walking across an Inverness city centre bridge with an adult companion prompted a violent response.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that Darren Jamieson (35), of the city’s Rosehaugh Road, asked a man what he had said to the boy and then punched him in the face.

Fiscal depute Pauline Gair told Sheriff Gary Aitken previously that it wasn't until a couple of days later that the victim sought medical attention after the May 18, 2024 attack on the Greig Street Bridge, when he was having difficulty speaking and eating.

Mrs Gair said that the victim had sustained a double fracture to his jaw and other mouth injuries and that two metal plates had to be inserted and held in place with metal screws.

"It was six weeks before he could eat properly and the recovery time was estimated at six to nine months," she said.

Jamieson admitted assault to severe injury and permanent impairment and had sentence deferred for a background report.

He reappeared before Sheriff Ian Cruickshank who imposed a sentence of 220 hours unpaid work as an alternative to custody.
