Police were subjected to a torrent of abuse and sectarian comments by an Inverness man who had been arrested for having a hammer.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that Robin Munro (39), of Mackintosh Road, had been refused service on November 27, 2020 at a take-away near Raigmore Estate where he lives.

He then took up a position in the middle of Millburn Road, shouting at passing cars.

An off-duty police officer cycled past and saw Munro was holding a hammer so she contacted colleagues.

Munro was then tracked down in Mackintosh Road, still holding the hammer and brandishing it aggressively, fiscal depute Robyn MacLeod told the court, adding: “An officer made demands to him to drop the hammer but he refused and walked towards one of them.

“He was then grabbed and taken to the ground, restrained and handcuffed.

“Munro was taken to Burnett Road Police Station and in the custody suite he was highly aggressive, threatening and abusive, shouting, swearing and making repeated threats.

“He also made a sectarian comment towards them.”

Defence solicitor Marc Dickson said his client had no recollection of events but accepted the witness statements about his behaviour.

Sentence was deferred until Thursday, July 21 when Munro has another case calling.
